Carol Clover was born on July 31st 1940 and was an American professor of film studies whose theory was the 'final girl theory'. This theory is a common concept within horror films about the final woman or girl who is alive and confronts the killer. This theory is commonly led up to through multiple characters being killed off and then one individual being left for a big climax of where the girl either dies, kills the murderer or escapes the scene.
The final girl theory usually includes a common characteristic in that the girl is often virginal or has a unisex name such as Billy, Teddy or Georgie. As well as this the final girl usually has some sort of history with the murderer. For example in Scream 1 Sidney's boyfriend Billy is killed and in Scream 3 the murderer is revealed to be Roman, Sidneys half brother.
